Someone once suggested that Obama's problems resulted from inexperience, that two years in the Senate just doesn't give one enough of a handle on how things are done in Congress.

Sure, he had Emanuel, Pelosi and Reid to guide him, but that's like back seat driving. There's nothing like a strong leader to get the legislators to march in step.

Flashback to Lyndon Johnson, who had extensive legislative experience. Civil Rights, Medicare and other bills that were stuck in Congress during the Kennedy era passed under his administration. Johnson knew what levers to pull and what buttons to push and used the full power of the Presidency to get legislators to see things his way.

It's unfair to Obama to play Monday Morning Quarterback and speculate about how LBJ might have handled things, but Johnson had something of a reputation for twisting arms to the breaking point - and heaven help you if you crossed him.
