From what I know, the US (FCC) is suppose to allow a set number of HD channels from your cable box unencrypted via "Clear QAM". My Hauppauge TV tuner card supports a QAM connection. So that is good for you.

Here in Communist Canada, they let the cable provider do whatever, as such, every single HD broadcast is encrypted (partly why my HD move forward stalled). The coneheads in Ottawa seem to care more about placating Bell and their usage billing aspirations than ensuring all Canadians are provided free unencrypted signals for standard Canadian networks as per the US.

My condo at the moment wouldn't dare allow me to erect an HD Antenna which would pull in a fair amount of good Clear QAM stations OTA (including some US stations) so likewise halted.

I have to say though - that with the HD what you EXPECT to get and what you WILL get may differ. In SD world anything off the shelf will allow you to record that signal. But in HD world - you are walking a tight rope.

Haven't brushed up my experience but the goal is -- from the cable box via HDMI into a recording box - then HDMI to the TV. If the stations are encrypted this may be impossible. Hence QAM from the cable box, into the QAM capture card, into the PC unencrypted. Against the Laws of the Cable Warlords - I can't do this with my cable box.

Cheers!
