Out of my realm of need, but check out HD HomeRun.

Basically signal (Clear QAM) comes from the HD antenna into this device then via dual NICs into a server or PC.

Anyway, it is clear that the new low wattage Intel
CPUs and 1155 motherboards make the whole thing worth
another look, and thanks again for all your thoughts!

My Hauppauge encodes (hardware) via MPEG2. As such I have never had any problems recording - ie if another app is running, burning a DVD, whatever. I never have to "check to see if I am recording before I run this app" - EVER. Always perfect recordings.

I suspect this device encodes as well but not 100% - if it does then your PC requirements are drastically reduced. However, if you "encode" to save space, then you need a powerful enough box to decode before sending to the TV.

MediaMVP decodes (hardware; actually a linux box w/flash) MPEG2 signal and delivers it to the TV.

If I play DivX on the MediaMVP, it requires the PC to "decode DivX, re-encode MPEG" on the fly - which taxes the PC.

They are selling capture devices without encoders - but then you need a more powerful PC. Basically a cheapo way of doing things. Personally I would lean toward hardware encoding where ever possible.

(lots and lots of stuff out there ... we are not alone in our quest, Mike).
