Mercury is an extremely dangerous metal. Many clock makers were killed by the use of mercury to assist in the gilding of the clocks. Hat makers used mercury in making the famed top hats and many died as a result or simply went "mad". That is where the term "Mad Hatter" or "Mad as a Hatter" originated.

I too used to play with mercury as a child. I often wonder what affects it had on me. The vapors as mercury evaporates are the most dangerous. It was used in the 1800s and still today in South America to gather and concentrate small gold particles. It is then evaporated leaving just the gold.

Lead was also used in "split shot" as a weight on fishing line and we all used to close the lead shot around the line with our teeth.
