Conservation is the tendency to preserve what is established.

I had a course in Forestry School in which the entire quarter was essentially devoted to the definition of 'conservation.'

The principle the course attempted to get across was: Conservation is a deceleration of consumption. I remember thinking (and writing in my course papers) that it doesn't matter if you slow the train down if there's a wreck at the end of it anyway.
