"A society where human rights are "god given" is more likely to be respectful of those rights than a civilization whose God does not accept any rules whatsoever, and makes no deals and grants no rights."
I agree with the usefulness of the Judeo-Christian god, culturally, and it may well have a lot to do with how successful we have been. Many gods have been tried, this version seems to work for now, provides the framework/underpinnings for a system that allows man to move up and out of a mud hut. All well and good, but probably not an accurate description of whatever god there might be if there is such a thing at all. Not an original idea with me (remember, I'm not sure I'm capable of such a thing anyway), but the gods seem to be made in our image, not the other way around.
So the Jews (and later the Christians), being shrewder readers of human nature (than the Greeks or Aztecs, for example), created a god that fostered progress. So far.
Anyway, it's time to get the kid from soccer practice. I'll yield the thread back to the normal ebb and flow of conversation, since I'm not a theologian or philosopher, except in the manner of your typical dilettante.
