For the DVR - let me make a comment on that.

a) Signal comes into home. For me a big problem is how compressed is that signal - it varies by channel no question. More "high demand" (ie premium paid channels) have the best picture.

BEST = Pay Per View
Next best = Premium movies-HD
Next best = HD
Next best = Premium movies-SD
etc etc

In my opinion ...

I have seen really horrible stations. And I am sure you know what I mean - heavy on pixelation - seen esp during fast video. The better the quality - you see little to none.

b) The "compression" of that above is IMO "as is" for a NON-DVR.

c) Our DVRs here - Rogers weapon of choice is from Cisco (Scientific Atlanta).

No question in my mind, the box compresses and we have no control. That enables them to tout "80 hours of programming" etc.

d) With the SAGE TV product - I am using standard cable boxes. So compression IMO is capped to whatever is broadcasted. I play with it though.

For a daily program that is watched and tossed, I reduce the quality. For a movie that I want a reasonable good quality I will jack it up. All controlled at the program level. Helps with conserving space on unessential crap and allows me to get a "good" picture. Don't know the numbers per say but for average I get 2GB per hour of recording. Better quality - that could easily get to 4GB or more.

Enjoy your books! Chuckle. In our house "No TV" would be just unacceptable. IMO down right UN-American. And I am a Canuck living in this frozen wasteland. LOL!

(Trust me -- when booking hotels, no HBO - no go!)
