"We think 40 percent of all retail will be sub-$1,000 systems (in the fourth quarter)," Creative Strategies' Bajarin said. "One of the bigger buzzes will be from companies jumping into the area." [Note -- SoftDVD won't run on these systems, which account for 40% of all NEW retail systems sold. BillyG] The sub-$1,000 systems must be upgraded to take DVD. Obviously they don't include any DVD at that price, so the user would have to replace the CD-ROM drive with a DVD drive. Not a likely scenario for a sub-$1,000 system buyer. Maybe when prices drop they will come with DVD, but by that time the faster processors will be in the sub-$1,000 machines, and they can run SoftDVD. For now, the sub-$1,000 systems won't benefit either hardware or software DVD solutions.
