"SGI is going to dominate the NT workstation market. Enough said."

Whoa! I am a relentless SGI booster, but I am not so confident. SGI's worst problem is marketing. How is SGI going to go up against powerhouses like Compaq -- organizations whose marketing skills have been honed to razor edges by a marketplace with thin margins and terrific competiton? SGI first has to master a new business model of:

1. Thin margins
2. Big volumes
3. Competitive marketing
4. Developing a high-quality "orphan" machine on an unfamiliar NT platform

Each task my itself is a big and potentially insurmountable change in this company. My best hope is to see them snatch a chunk of the high-end workstation and server market. That should be enough to see solid growth for SGI. I have become humble. But I'll tell you, 17 is far from my favorite number! --JD
