"Apple will retrieve known locations for nearby cell towers and Wi-Fi access points from its proprietary database and transmit the data back to the device"

The point about whether Apple collects gps location data as well as wifi access point and cell tower association data from iPhones is moot. They clearly do, that's how they are able to build up this database that allowed them to replace Skyhook. There is nothing underhanded about that-- they said they would, they did, and probably continue to do so. I have no problem with it as long as it's anonymous.

The existence of this file on iPhones is the issue I have, whether it's encrypted to not. If you don't think it's a big deal, consider this-- what if OJ had an iPhone? For better or worse, it changes things. If people are carrying around a device that logs their every move, they need to know about it so they can make informed decisions. That goes for Android phones, regular cell phones etc.
