Obviously depends how far you are from the border.. Not every one does it since it may not be convenient or timely but crossing the border if you have a passport or upgraded driver's license (that is issued with some of your passport info encrypted on them), is not a big deal.. takes 10 minutes to 30 minutes depending on the congestion at the border and time of the day..

I don't cross the border to fill up but if I am there for some other reason, I will absolutely make sure that is the last thing I do before driving back.. :o)
