This graphic was presented by the Geologist Jeffrey Brown at the 2009 ASPO conference. Using the example of Indonesia, Egypt and Britain, it illustrates the deceptive nature of "normalcy." When the oil flow rates are high, society functions normally. The problem is oil reserves are being depleted at a very high rate. After 3 years, net exports are down by only 9%, but the remaining oil available for export has been depleted by 53%:
