It's my mother's theory - from about 4 decades ago. She was a leader of women getting into doing things out of traditional spheres. <So what's your theory on this? ;)

She pointed out to me way back then that we could see when an occupation was losing status because women would be getting into it; teaching, bank tellers, many spheres were traditionally male, but females crowded in.

Applied to advanced degrees, women are taking over ... the status of "advanced degrees" has been declining. Now degrees are handed out like confetti. Now, there are many challenges to credentialism, education as a bubble, there's an offer of $100,000 to drop out and start a business. Education isn't what it used to be. The "advanced degrees" are not involving tough stuff like engineering, maths, computers, science [environmental "science" is anything but judging by what "The Science" asserts].

Men are off on a new adventure - into the wild blue yonder of Cyberspace. Temporal politics is also becoming more of a feminine occupation. Maggie Thatcher would biff them with her handbag. Real men won't be seen dead in politics in a few more decades as women crowd in. The world is like a living room - women rule caves, houses and living rooms. Blokes have to go outside and hunt buffalo, fight tigers and stuff.

China and other Asian countries haven't figured it out yet.
