Dem to Boehner: Now take up bill to end tax breaks for Big Oil

Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) won praise Tuesday from one Democrat who encouraged the top Republican to back legislation eliminating tax breaks for oil companies.

Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.) welcomed Boehner's comments yesterday, suggesting he might be open to eliminating subsidies to large oil-and-gas companies, and encouraged Boehner to bring up Blumenauer's bill, H.R. 601, for a vote.

Blumenauer tweeted:

Right on, @SpeakerBoehner. Eliminate subsidies for Big Oil. HR 601 is teed up and ready to go.
Boehner told ABC News that oil-and-gas companies should pay their "fair share" in taxes and expressed openness to eliminating some of the tax breaks for those companies, something that Democrats long have sought.

The Speaker's office did walk those remarks back to a degree on Tuesday, saying Boehner doesn't support any of Democrats' suggestions so far and was trying not to "take the bait and fall into the trap of defending 'Big Oil' companies."
