Sounds like a plan.

I use Paragon Manager 8.5 on windows XP to control what goes where. I suppose I could upgrade Paragon to something windows 7 compatible one day but haven't bothered so far. Paragon 8.5 cannot be used on Windows 7 at all, not even in XP mode. Paragon can be run inside windows or outside of it using the boot disk depending on your mood and preference.

Here is a picture of the two Hard Disks I have running as I type this. Normally I would have DISK 1 switched off.

As you can see, I can Hide/Unhide, make Active/Inactive, Copy a partition, or a whole disk with just a few key strokes. There is a boot Manager wizard, plus a number of utilities including a complete defragmentation program that will defragment the windows OS as well as other files. It works on Linux too.

Of course a powerful tool like this can be destructive if you make a mistake, but with a little bit of practise and caution, including making appropriate backup images, it's a useful versatile tool that can deal with anything that is thrown at it.

I use caddies for my external hard drives these days. One for SATA drives and one for IDE drives. I use an old IDE Hard Drive to run up Linux, but I haven't had much time to do that recently. At the moment, a third internal fixed SATA drive is used to boot my machine.
