When you were new
And I held the world in my arms
perfect child, I thought,
How could I know looking into your eyes
That for you, the world would be a puzzle
with pieces missing?

When you smiled at me
your tooothless grin
and I enfolded you in my arms
I had never contemplated the depths,
the sadness, of seeing you as less
than my perfect boy.

Looking at other mother's sons
So perfect seeming, so untroubled,
I am enraged by the burden placed
upon you, upon us
It would be easier if I loved you less
for this has broken my heart.
