Strange how "fan" culture and behavior varies so widely from city to city... it is disturbing to hear this stuff about fans in Philly... I hope it is a local phenomena and not the first steps toward British and European style soccer hooliganism...

The closest thing I've seen to what's been described in Philly is when the Oakland Raiders come to San Diego every season. About half of all local ticket holders sell their tix and stay away... of course, that just means more tix available for the Raider Nation folks who were "left behind" in LA... and that is a big group... arrests at Raiders game in SD ave. 6 times more than average for any other visiting team game.

Very strange to me how "invested" certain fan elements become, using their fandom as a proxy for... whatever it is missing in their real lives...

I think I am an irrational fan at times wrt the Reds, but this sort of stuff gives me a lot of perspective.
