WESTPORT, Nov 14 (Reuters) - Three multicenter teams of AIDS researchers have independently verified that, in patients receiving highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) who have undetectable levels of HIV in their blood, HIV latently infects resting CD4 cells and remains capable of producing infectious virus. However, this reservoir of HIV does not seem to give rise to new drug-resistant mutations, despite some evidence that active intracellular viral replication may be occurring.
