Chicago breaks gas price record at $4.44 a gallon By Kim Janssen Staff Reporter May 4, 2011 06:32AM suntimes.com Chicago’s average gas price hit an all-time high of $4.44 a gallon Tuesday — beating a previous record of $4.34 set in July 2008, according to the Automobile Association of America. Prices have steadily risen since the start of the year and are now higher in Chicago than anywhere else in the nation except Hawaii, AAA figures show. The highest price in the city Tuesday was $4.85 a gallon, recorded at a BP station at 755 W. Lawrence, according to chicagogasprices.com. AAA spokeswoman Beth Mosher blamed taxes for Chicago’s unwanted position at the top of the price charts, saying, “it’s one of the very few major cities that levies a gas tax on top of the state and county tax.” Gas taxes should be reinvested in transportation, not placed in the city’s general fund, she added. Tuesday’s national average gas price of $3.97 far outpaces a national inflation-adjusted average of $3.46, recorded during the March 1981 oil shock — for 26 years the high-water mark of U.S. gas prices.
