Perhaps some of the opposition to spending a lot on high speed rail has something to do with cultural values, or perceived partisan advantage.

Most of it though is based on the fact that at least for most possible routes high speed rail simply isn't a good investment (at least not at this time, with different technologies and ideas, and different non-technological circumstances that could change). The cost is too high, and our countries geography and population distribution doesn't support an extensive high speed network, unless you just throw money at the problem without being concerned about low passenger levels, high operating losses and low to negative return on investment.


Nonsense. The EU is nearly the size of the US and HSR works fine there. What we need is to amend and refine HSR so it works best for the way the US operates.
