Well, I had decided that in as much as I live out in the middle of nowhere and believe there is a 50/50 chance of a prolonged grid malfunction I had ought to give the sitcheeation a thunk.

My biggest concern is that the power goes down in the middle of winter. Since it's just me and the pooch I had some not so very pleasant images of sitting in the dark for 16 hours a day with no distractions. I started seeing myself starring in The Shinning.

I began by thinking backup generator and went through gas, diesel and LP. Gas and diesel went out the window for obvious reasons. After Fukushima I got really interested in solar.

The problem with solar is it doesn't produce spit in this country in the winter when my need is greatest. In summer hell I can't even stay awake until the sun goes down.

So, what I have now decided is the ultimate system is grid-tied solar with propane generator backup.

For those of us who live in the wilderness the real challenge is finding a reputable installer. Turned out there was only one within a 100 miles of me and he turned out flakier than baklava.

So, now I'm working directly with a supplier who is trying to fix me up with a reputable company in Missoula. So far, this route is saving me around 30%.
