but still almost everyone exceeds the speed limit in their car, a huge number of people drink alcohol before they are 21, tens of millions take illegal narcotics, and in all sorts of other ways don't follow the law.
Oh yeah, we rebel at the margin. That's actually the point of WHY we overwhelming restrict our selves with rules and regulations. Frankly, everybody understands that they, and other humans are cheats and liars. And the only way to create a level playing field is by establishing rules and regulations, and giving up liberty to folks to enforce them. It's everywhere in human existence Tim, look around.
Think of our "fun" pastimes. Baseball, basketball, football. The first thing we do is restrict the geography, a human imperative. Football about 40x100 yards all else " out of bounds". Then we impose a amazing amount of rules and penalties. Imagine if there was no "offsides" regulation? Imagine if defensive lineman could go for the knees. Imagine football with no rules or refs. It would be "humanly" impossible to play the game. We NEED regulation or we couldn't interact in a mutually positive way.
We organize ourselves around thousands of rules and regulations. That's undeniable, like it or not. It's human; it's elemental. Why?
I suspect two reasons. One, it gave us a evolutionary advantage to sacrifice liberty for the greater good of the species. Two, we are at essence lying cheating SOB's and left to our own devices we would screw each other into the ground.
We regulate and legislate everything Tim. That's a fact. Intellectually you have to back up from the point and figure out why. Then you can move forward, with or without your ideology.
But libertarianism doesn't resemble in any way how humans organize themselves.
I often thought the only true libertarians are the sociopaths. Marginally the petty criminals. The rest of us conform to 10,000 laws a minute for the greater good.
It's what makes us such a strong species. |
