My understanding is that probably one of the most difficult challenges facing a vendor introducing a new data tape drive is generating software support. Chicken and egg situation really. The major software developers will not spend the time and effort to write code for a product that doesn't have the sales volume yet to make it worthwhile. Without software support from the major vendors, the tape drive vendor will have a hard time generating any significant sales volume. The tape vendor usually ends up paying relatively large amounts of money to make it worthwhile for the major software houses, i.e., if they have the time.

RE: IBM/SEG/HWP

I don't have the foggiest idea what these folks are up to. Are they really coming out with a new tape drive? Or are they developing standardized data formats?
