I have an ameritrade account and it all depends what time of day you want to trade. During the busy hours it can take up to 5 minutes but my experience so far has been less than 30 secs in general.

When the market was falling a couple of weeks back, forget it. But I think all brokerages were in the same boat.

They just changed their rates and it is like 9 bucks for a online trade, 18 for a broker assisted, (penny stocks can't be done online), and 23 for limit orders broker assisted.
