Dollars and cents is mostly a convenient shorthand for the actual value. The real value is not physical money or some electronic balance, its the usefulness of the oil. The economic usefulness of the oil increases to the extent we are running low on other supplies. Its both basic supply and demand, and also diminishing marginal utility, have incredibly huge amounts of something and each bit of it is worth less. If OTOH its scarce relative to demand its worth more.

If there is no oil

And if there are pink unicorns that can use their magic to give us all the clean energy we need...

There is oil, so "if there is no oil" doesn't make a lot of sense.

If we are running out quickly (I point I don't really agree with, but I'll go with it for now) it becomes even less sensible to forgo what oil we do have.
