Glenn, FWIW, I'm a big fan of white gold and platinum. One of the problems I've encountered has been much too little availability of jewelry manufactured in these metals. I recently had a diamond solitaire necklace custom made and believe me, I had a tough time finding just the right chain in white gold. The major fashion magazines show some beautiful white gold and platinum pieces, but it's tough to find. Just my 2 cents, but I think if you're industry would start making more pieces available in white gold, you'd see some new demand. Betty, There has been almost no jewelry made with white gold and plantinum during the years of 1990-1995. The demand was not there and no one wanted to stock white. The US sales were 99% yellow gold. White gold was 40% of sales from the years of 1970-1983. Then the trend to yell began. The trend is reversing. Each year there is more demand for white gold and plantinum. You will be seeing a lot of of both metal during the next few years. Your point about show white would help sales is well taken. The industry is very capital intensive. You will find stores stock white or platinum until it is at least 10% of sales. My guess is plantinum will outsell white gold by the year 2000 and be 10% of sales. That is if the metals stay reasonably close in pricing changes. The cost to me of an item in my inventory is $1000 to me. How many of theses peaces do I want to stock in white if they represent 2% of my sales? There is the problem. I agree with what you said but the demand will have to come before the stores show a lot of white. Glenn
