Thanks GM. Very helpful. Also makes sense considering what IBM did with the GMR drive - they increased TPI MUCH more than the "normal" DD, but BPI didn't necessarily look all that ahead of it's time. My guess is the DTR couldn't keep up with another increase in BPI for now anyway. Of course I don't have to tell you that, because you were IBM..

While I've got your ear. I've been collecting info on currently available DDs - capacity, heads, areal density, TPI, BPI, DTR, etc. Some drives specify TPI and tracks per surface(cylinders), others don't. But most drives specify the DD config - Cyl, heads, Sectors. But surely that cyl doesn't correspond to tracks per surface because I see #s like 13k, 16k for drives that can't be that high. (The new IBM GMR is 13.1k tracks.) And the heads # in that config doesn't correspond to what I think of as heads. Can you enlighten me? Sorry for the elementary questions.
