my first two years playing baseball were nothing to be proud of. I wasn't exactly like Lupus from the Bad News Bears, but I was pretty damned close.

Then one day our team needed a catcher. I volunteered....best decision of my childhood. Seeing all of the pitches coming in really helped my hitting. Before too long I was at the top of the lineup and making plays.

I remember once though when my Mom took my sister and I sailing and I got a severe sunburn on my legs and arms and then I came back for a game. I got on first base ok, but then the next guy hit a grounder to shortstop and I slide into second. He went down for the tag and slapped me hard on the thigh with his glove. I was crying so bad not only from the tag on the sunburn, but from sliding on the sunburn on the other side. My coach was a bit of a dick and was berating me about crying just because I got tagged out. I was crying so hard that I couldn't even explain that it was from pain, not sadness. This was actually the year before I got good...so I was pretty discouraged at this point.
