I believe with my dad there was no we in the planning. It isn't like it left my mother destitute. Just that there was no payout. In his particular case the money just disappeared.

Even SS is better than that, where my mother could collect his higher amount.

Seems people on SI do much more planning than the average Joe, who I swear spends more time planning his two week vacation than he does his retirement.
