Dan:
It is becoming very apparent that JAVA is winning. It is also becoming very apparent that SUNs vision: The Network is the Computer is gaining widespread buyin.
Read today's Washington Post front page-- Rivals Unite to Combat Microsoft, 5 firms plan common platform for Internet.
Anyway, the 5 firms are: IBM, Netscape, Novell, Oracle, and SUN. The plan is to create an open architecture, and products to support that architecture. This vision is based on three elements: NCs/information devices, JAVA, and CORBA. Welcome to the world of "virtual corporation" and coopetition. I strongly belive that this alliance is strategic in intent, and poses a formidable threat to Microsoft.
On a different note, a lot of the executives are supporting DOJ in their consent decree battle with Microsoft. Recently, Mitch Kapor voiced his concern on Microsoft's business principles. The debate has reached a new level at this moment in time. |
