<You've got to admit though, the City of San Francisco has always been a ways out there on the edge.>

San Francisco is almost 500 miles north of my house and has virtually nothing to do with the life of the ave. CA resident.

I recently drove 800 miles north over two days and never left the state.

This is a huge state.

There are so many different regions.

There are so many different types of people.

People tend to make the mistake of trying to lump all Californians into one group... shoot, we can't even figure out how to do that... Why would non-residents think we are all the same here?

Yesterday's San Diego Union-Tribune ran a story showing that the job growth rate in CA is 1.5%, more than double the national ave... sure, we have a lot of ground to make up, but CA always manages to muddle through -- maybe because we are so huge and are made up of a collection of wildly different groups of people.

In my personal experience, people in the rural south are much more disconnected from reality than most of the nation and way more disconnected from reality than CA -- I lived in a rural TN town for 7 years before moving to San Diego... what a relief it was to be among relatively "normal" people again.

Just sayin...
