On the eve of its 63rd Independence Day, Israel's population stood at 7,746,000, according to figures released by the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS). Some 5,837,000 of the population (75.3 percent) are Jewish Israelis, 1,587,000 (20.5%) are Israeli Arabs and those not identified as either make up the remaining 4.2% of the population, or 322,000 people. When the state was established, there were only 806,000 residents, with this number reaching its first and second million in 1949 and 1958 respectively. Today, over 70% of the total Jewish population are "Sabras" - born in Israel - compared with 35% native-born in 1948.
The statistics show that the population in Israel grew by 143,000 (1.9%) in 2010, a similar growth rate to the rest of the decade. Israel also absobed some 16,000 immigrants, including 6,000 who were born abroad to Israeli parents and moved to Israel for the first time. Another 4,000 people to Israel as a part of a family reunification. Another 11,000 Israelis who have been living abroad for more than 12 months were deducted from the total population.

Between Israeli Independence Day 2010 and 2011, approximately 178,000 babies born, and 43,000 people passed away. 24,500 immigrants arrived in Israel (of those, 6,500 were "immigrating citizens," a person born to an Israeli citizen while staying abroad, who entered Israeli with the intention of settling). On the other hand, there were approximately 12,000 persons less in the population due to the migration balance of Israelis (the departures and returns of Israelis who stayed abroad more than one continuous year). An additional 7,500 were added to the population from other components. In total, the population of Israel grew since the 62nd Independence Day by approximately 155,000 residents – a growth of 2.0%.
In 1948 there was only one city in Israel with more than 100,000 residents – Tel Aviv-Yafo (248,000). Today, 14 cities number more than 100,000 residents, of which 6 number more than 200,000 residents: Jerusalem, Tel Aviv-Yafo, Haifa, Rishon LeZiyyon, Ashdod, and Petah Tikvah. |
