Mountain states play an out-sized part in national politics in many ways. They don't add many electoral votes, but they all have two senators, just like states with many many times their populations. That's real effect, what a fool here or there says are mere words into the ether.

With mountain states, it really depends on the personality of the pol. Someone with a strong personality can make a name for him or herself. However, with southern pols, they can get clout just by reason of population. After all, its the number of votes that determine the House reps and the presidency. If you look at the committees controlled by the Rs in Congress, most are led by southern Rs.

As the South's population has grown so has its influence on national politics.....to whit, twenty years ago, there was little talk about Creationism or placing the Ten Commandments in city halls or eliminating Medicare.....to name just three issues.

I think its a mistake to underestimate the impact and influence of southern politics on the national scene.
