Personality doesn't matter when it comes to a state with fewer than a million people still having two Senators. I'm not talking about influence in terms of talking heads, but in their votes in the Senate. You are correct about the rise of creationism & such, but look at the mega-churches of a rightward bent and you will be looking hard at Colorado and California. The point is not to play gotcha but if we want to combat those things it pays to know who we are talking about. When white liberals from blue states, especially those from very white states or who live in very white areas of their states surrounded by liberals, spend their time worrying over simply the Old South, it doesn't accomplish much on a national level, not even on a state or local level. In fact, it seems state and local levels are often neglected with the central focus being only on the national. Creationism wouldn't be getting footholds in schools all over the country, and it is all over, if liberals hadn't neglected running hard for school boards and paying attention to their own yards.
