Paul's legacy is already secure. He saw the coming of the smart device. Many CEOs of the biggest companies in the wold missed this, including Intel and Nokia. If Paul had missed this Qcoms share price would be in the 20's and we all would have bailed a year ago. Years ago he positioned his company for this new technology cycle to have a great product at the right time. No doubt Intel, Nokia, Csco, Rimm (all great companies) and many others wished their CEO's had been as insightful and I'm quite certain that the HTC CEO has a very high opinion of PJ.
Understanding this business is important to this argument. Technology companies do not simply operate in perpetuity. Once a technology has saturated the market there must be a new tech cycle to spur profits and share price. The window you are looking at was the waning of the old tech cycle, after a 400% share price profit, when buying was down and R&D expenses were up preparing for this next wave. Due to this and that small banking problem the share price has been somewhat range bound, still it is up 70% from last summer low and a hell of a lot better than many tech companies. (Faith in the company and buys last year and you made a lot of money. ) Mirasol is a gamble on a good tech, but it's failure will not doom PJ's legacy.
