A Communicator over 1X or even EVDO wouldn't have fared any better. There were Treos and Blackberries running on both CDMA and GSM at the time, and they were no more than niche products.

I think you forget that the iPhone, the first truly successful smartphone, was EDGE-only. Nokia had their heart in the right place-- they recognized that veritical integration would be important and wanted to be Apple, not Dell. They just couldn't execute.
