There were Treos and Blackberries running on both CDMA and GSM at the time, and they were no more than niche products. I think you forget that the iPhone, the first truly successful smartphone, was EDGE-only. Nokia had their heart in the right place-- they recognized that veritical integration would be important and wanted to be Apple, not Dell. They just couldn't execute.
