Water wheels became hydro electric power and wind mills fell by the way side. Could that be because they just weren't competitive? i remember my high science science teacher who wrote the science book used by all the high schools in new york city telling us in the future a piece of uranium the size of a piece of coal would provide the whole city with electric power. Don't think it ever came to happen.
I remember school children once built a model of hydro electric damns between the east river and the long island sound that would use the power of the tides to generate electric power. Seemed like a good idea to me. Strange there isn't more talk about the power of the tides of it's use for power. Speak about being renewable?
