Since 2007, digital TV has come a long way. Mpeg4/h.264 has been changed to mjpeg video and MP3 audio. Zoom to thumbnails are practical as data compression technology to download then zoom back to full resolution on your monitor(Now hdmi 720p or 1080p TV).

Cable is scared of ipTV coming free with ondemand movies. Social network moved away from portals to short messages.

Cellphones and tablets are sharing wireless 3/4G or WiFi/n on the microwave towers. Free WiFi hotspots are coming to town free(out of real estate taxes). This put pressure on CableTV and their internet broadband technology(ipTV). Fortunately, wireless traffic control in the internet system has yet to be worked out, giving wired CabletV an incentive to offer more speed and more dedicated speed(more cost for true 300 mbps).

So, cableTV(owning movie rights) is not going to die or even roll over, unless communications technology is not compatible with telephone companies(edgeQam data channels).
