Apple (AAPL) to Miss Q2 iPhone Shipment Mark... Just Like Last Two Quarters - Digitimes
7:50 am ET 06/03/2011 - StreetInsider

Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPhone is pretty cool, and introducing it on the Verizon (NYSE: VZ) network was a smart move by the Cupertino, CA-based media and manufacturing giant.

But according to Digitimes, the honeymoon may be over.

The firm reports actual iPhone sales were 2.2 million in the first-quarter, rather sharply below the 3-4 million units expected by analysts.

That means the introduction of the Verizone iPhone was only a small hiccup on Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) Android's road to gain more market share. Digitimes believes the Android will continue its stellar growth in the second quarter.

Further, the firm points to an increasing gap between actual and estimated iPhone shipments: from 29.3 percent in the fourth quarter to 39.4 percent in the first quarter. About 18.65 million iPhones were shipped in the first quarter, versus Apple's outlook for 21 million. Looking back at the fourth quarter, only 16.24 million units were shipped, far below Apple's estimate of 26 million.

Digitimes is expecting shipments of 13.5 million iPhones for the second quarter, compared with the 18 million expected by Apple.

Apple is trading just about flat ahead of the bell Friday.
