Matsushita To Boost DVD Capacity At California Plant

satellite.nikkei.co.jp

OSAKA (Nikkei)-Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. will more than triple production capacity for DVD blanks in the U.S. to 2 million discs a month by next spring, and may increase capacity in Japan as well next year. The firm aims to meet growing demand, mainly in the U.S., for DVD software.

A wholly owned Matsushita California subsidiary started turning out 600,000 discs a month in September, and plans to add four production lines to its current two by spring at a cost of some 800 million yen.

The Osaka-based manufacturer of consumer electronics gear currently has monthly capacity to make 450,000 discs in Japan. It expects these facilities to be operating at full capacity by the end of this fiscal year.
