as long as the bond guys feel confident they are going to get paid and get their principal returned, they will behave all right. the moment they lose confidence that they will get paid or will lose too much principal, rates will suddenly jump/bonds will be sold and the panic will be on. it's a cliff, and you won't know where it is until you feel it.

not getting paid the interest and losing too much principal are two different things that will happen simultaneously -- if it happens.
