Republican: Pentagon will 'do anything' to get more taxpayer money By Josiah Ryan - 06/02/11 12:01 PM ET Republican Rep. John Duncan (Tenn.) on Thursday accused the Pentagon of being willing do anything within its power to aggrandize its own budget. "The Pentagon is a giant bureaucracy that will do anything within its tremendous power to get more and more money from taxpayers," Duncan said in comments on the House floor. "You can never satisfy government's appetite for money or land. They always want more. Every gigantic bureaucracy always wants to expand its mission so it can get more money. Every government agency always exaggerates the threats it is facing so that it can get more money." Duncan also expressed frustration that fiscal conservatives like himself have not led the fight to reduce military spending. "Fiscal conservatives should be the ones most horrified at the hundreds of billions we have poured and continue to pour down these Iraq, Afghanistan and Libyan rat holes," said Duncan. "There have to be limits somewhere. The American people do not want, nor can they afford, endless foreign wars". The Hill reported on Tuesday that the House Appropriations Committee has crafted a Pentagon funding bill that would swell spending for fiscal year 2012 and beyond even as many members of Congress are calling for drastic cuts in overall governments outlays. thehill.com
