Had a Philips DVD/DivX player. They are cheap because they are junk. Mine - amazingly enough - played perfectly until one day the audio just decided to stop.

Rumor has it that most of their units sold, after a while, are refurbed (guts). Philips, to me, is just a few steps above Dollar Store chit. Literally.

Though over the years I have had issues with all optical devices - IMO prematurely, but Philips is high on my avoid list.

Partly why I moved to a whole-home PVR system - tired of the DVD players. I just checked and it appears BluRays are in the $150 range - Pigs will be flying if I have to pay north of $50-75. Sony will have to radically lower their license fees for this one to take part.

But alas, everyone has different luck.
