Help!

I'm on my Dell laptop, Windows 7.

Suddenly, I cannot coax any sound out of my computer. The sound icon in the lower right taskbar is perfectly normal: sound on at middle levels.

However, if I try to play an online video that I know has sounds, I hear nothing, even though its embedded sound icon indicates that it thinks it is sounding normally.

I know that sound on my laptop was normal as of this morning.

During the day, I downloaded some extremely secure emails from a large company client, and I played a CD-ROM that I had received from the same large company.

The only other thing that I noted was different was that the information on the CD-ROM was in what I now have learned was Excel Compatibility Mode, which I had never seen before.

Can anyone piece together these diagnostics and come up with a cure? I want my sound back!

Thanks so much for your help,
