Regarding the number of DRAM chip designs, here are the ones
that TI sells:

Note that this doesn't include SDRAM, or SGRAM.

It is possible to have a commodity market, even with a vast number
of different possiblities. The reason is that if you overprice your
specialized part, the buyer switches to a competitor's cheaper
part. As I have mentioned before, this can be done with DSPs
easier than TI claims, as almost all coding is done in C.
