William, it is true that the Arab nations are in disarray, however that is how we like them. We (the US) pit arab against arab to keep the area destabilized. Can you imagine a powerful Arab Nation. What do you think that would to to oil supply and prices? Why is there an Isreal? We need allies in the area. Why is Sadam still in power? We need a strong leader to keep Iraq out of the hands of the Iranians.

As for the rest of the world wanting us to take over, I strongly disagree. Why the hell would our competitors want us to (overtly) control 90% of the world's oil supply? One thing that keeps OPEC weak is that it is made up of members who can and do cheat when prices are high. With the US in control of the area, we would have oil supply by the balls, and that would make the rest of the world very nervous.

Flagrantly taking "control" of the Middle East would be akin to Saddam's invasion of Kuwait, and likewise very unpopular without proper PR. No, we like our control of other nations to be much more subtle.
