Canada 'national project' was a no brainer. Just on the other side othe the Great Lakes was a huge coal and steel giant growing.

Immediately. They moved from wood to steel. (and stopped trapping and killing animals for fur (sorry I cold not resist :-) The Maritimes were left behind never to recover. (they had come up base don a harbour that never freezes and lots of wood for Europe.)

Invested in railways to move produce and rode the coat tails of the US. This was a great national project. Supplying materials and energy for the US century.

Ok they proved they can make tech stuff and produced planes and that giant arm that hauls things in and out of the space shuttle.

Canada had a simple 'national project', which perhaps is the reason why people say Canadians are boring people.
