The crash of Mr. Weiner's political stock began nearly two weeks ago, when he mistakenly sent to tens of thousands of his Twitter followers a message with a photo link he meant to send only to a female college student in Seattle. At first, Mr. Weiner lied and claimed his account had been hacked. Later, he said he wasn't sure if it was a photograph of him. Then he gave a tearful confession Monday in which he admitted to engaging in sexually charged online exchanges with about a half dozen women around the country over the past three years. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi has requested an ethics committee investigation to see whether government resources were used to conduct the conversations. Mr. Weiner has said he used his personal phone and computer. "Maybe his political career is over, but I'm sure he's going to have a show on television,'' predicted the senior Democratic staffer. That would follow the course set by another New York politician felled by a sex scandal, former governor Eliot Spitzer, after he was found to have patronized prostitutes.
