My wife was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer last fall and since then she has had surgery to remove the primary cancer in her ascending colon (October 2010) as well as liver surgery to remove three mets in her liver (March 2011). She is presently on adjuvent chemo consisting of xeloda plus metformin since April based on invitro lab results that showed this combination most effective at shattering her cancer cells. She was also on Tagamet prior to and after her liver surgery based on studies that showed reduced rates of recurrence caused by surgery. She presently has a CEA of 10. Her CEA prior to liver surgery was 20 so we are concerned that she is at risk of a recurrence. She is presently 53 years old. I love her very much and don't want to lose her to this terrible disease.
My head is about to explode from all the research papers I have read. Not only does the fight involve this disease but the side effects from the chemo. I certainly have mixed feelings about chemotherapy as it is an archaeic way to fight this disease. Some day all those chemo drugs will be relegated to the dust bin of history. There are so many paths to take that it has become mesmerizing for me as it is so difficult to know where her best hope lies. Beyond that we try to stay away from processed food and eat as much organic as we can find. There is some promising work on dendritic cell vaccines but to get into a clinical trial you could end up with a placebo. Anyone have any leads I can follow that shows the best success at fighting advanced colon cancer. We are fighting the odds and I hope she is alive long enough to see a real cure discovered.

Thanks,
Bob
