HBO will be driving the HDTV market with initial HDTV content.

Disagree with the comments of Bernoff of Forrester/Gates(?). The strong demand for HDTV audio and visual quality is real and the supply will become available much sooner than presently perceived. Every major CE company will be introducing HDTV units in '98 (all showcasing at the CES in January) with Zenith being first to market (as early as the second quarter '98). DBS systems such as DISH will be delivering HDTV by satellite to anyone in the US wanting to receive HBO's HDTV programming (arriving next Summer). CBS, the Turner group and the Discovery group will be right behind HBO, too.

According to one company officer, Zenith's TV sales will double upon the introduction of HDTV and margins will be huge. Given that Zenith presently sells around $1 billion/year worth of TVs, doubling this amount (assuming profit margins of just 10%) could earn ZE about $200 million from HDTV and SDTV sales alone as early as 1999. Add to that set-top boxes, Divx DVDs, digital cable modems and Zenith could earn an additional $200 million in '99. Not bad for a company with a present market capitalization of about $500 million!!
